Specialist Tour | African Women, Myth and Material Memory

African myth and folklore play a central role in shaping cultural identity, belief systems and collective memory. Moving between historic wooden artefacts and contemporary works, this tour explores how African women, spiritual power and myth have been represented and, at times, misunderstood. Join Gallery Assistant and African art enthusiast Lizzie Eidson as she examines sculptural and painted depictions of African women across time, drawing on Ethiopian, Mende and wider African oral traditions, alongside Yoruba-inflected ideas, to consider how these narratives have been erased and reanimated in contemporary practice.
